Hobart Marathon Festival 2027 preview: explore the waterfront event and the race-planning details runners should check with the organiser.

The Hobart Marathon Festival returns on Sunday 4 April 2027, bringing a multi-distance road-running program to Tasmania’s capital and its waterfront. The organiser lists more than 4,000 runners and options ranging from the full marathon to a two-kilometre event, making this a destination weekend for marathoners, families and newer runners.

The 2027 program includes the 42.2-kilometre Hobart Marathon, 21.1-kilometre half marathon, 10-kilometre race, five-kilometre run, five-kilometre walk and two-kilometre event. The marathon and half marathon start at 6:00am, followed by the 10-kilometre start at 7:30am, five-kilometre run and walk at 9:30am, and two-kilometre start at 10:30am. Entrants should recheck the official schedule before travelling because operational details can change.

Hobart Marathon Festival 2027: An honest Hobart course

The organiser describes the marathon as a rolling course rather than an easy flat route. Official event information places runners around Constitution Dock, the Derwent River and Salamanca Wharves, combining harbour scenery with Hobart’s heritage streets. The half marathon uses one loop, while marathon entrants complete two loops before the waterfront finish.

That layout rewards controlled pacing. Early excitement can make the first climbs feel deceptively easy, but runners still need enough strength for the second half. Training should include steady aerobic mileage, some rolling terrain and a few long runs that finish under control. The marathon cut-off is six hours, while the half marathon cut-off is three hours.

Use the organiser’s official marathon course information for route updates; the organiser currently says the full route map is coming soon. Do not rely on an unofficial recreation or an older downloaded map without checking it against the 2027 information.

What the 2026 results show

Direct timing-provider results for the 2026 Hobart Marathon list Dillon Goss as the men’s winner in 2:27:25. Petra Melis-Walsh was the first woman in 2:47:40. Harrison Bickers finished second overall in 2:37:39 and Thomas Barnett third in 2:39:28.

The 2026 marathon results also show 681 finishers in the full marathon. That figure is specific to the marathon finish list and should not be confused with the organiser’s broader “4,000+ runners” figure for the 2027 festival across all distances. The official results archive links to the timing provider for runners who want to examine complete rankings and splits.

Planning the race weekend

The event expo and registration desk are scheduled at PW1 on Castray Esplanade from 9:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday 3 April. The organiser says there is strictly no bib collection on race morning, so visiting runners should plan flights and accommodation accordingly. Bib postage is offered for Australian addresses, subject to the organiser’s deadline and conditions.

Cool autumn conditions may suit distance running, but Hobart weather can still shift. Pack layers for before and after the race, test race clothing during training and avoid introducing unfamiliar gear in the final week. Marathon participants can access personal special-needs drinks at multiple aid stations, with locations to be confirmed closer to the event.

Training priorities from spring to autumn

With the festival more than seven months away at the time of publication, runners have room to build gradually. A sensible sequence is to establish consistent easy running, develop a weekly long run, add controlled hills and strength work, and only then introduce marathon-specific sessions. Recovery weeks and realistic mileage increases matter more than chasing one impressive workout.

Use the talk test on easy days and save harder efforts for planned sessions. Practise breakfast, fluids and race fuel during long runs rather than waiting until April. A GPS watch can help manage lap pace and effort on a rolling course; see the independent reviews and guides at Running Watches Australia.
