Australia’s middle-distance women delivered a magnificent one-two-three finish in the inaugural women’s mile at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Abbey Caldwell producing a brilliant late surge to claim gold.
Caldwell timed her move superbly in a tactical final, finding another gear over the closing 200 metres and racing home in 4:39.31. Jessica Hull secured silver in 4:39.86, while Claudia Hollingsworth completed the all-Australian podium with bronze in 4:40.20.
It was a glorious display of Australian depth, composure and racing intelligence. Caldwell’s decisive finish was the mark of a champion, while Hull and Hollingsworth showed enormous class to make Commonwealth Games history alongside her. Seeing three green-and-gold uniforms fill the podium was a proud moment for Australian running.
The result was especially significant because this was the first women’s mile staged at a Commonwealth Games. Caldwell is therefore the event’s first champion, and the Australian trio will forever own a special place in Games history.
Every athlete in the race faced the pressure of a slow, tactical contest, but the Australians remained calm and trusted their finishing speed. Their clean sweep underlined the strength of the country’s current middle-distance generation and gave supporters at home a performance to celebrate for years to come.
