Pilates for runners: a 20-minute strength and control session with practical movement guidance and session-planning considerations.
Running repeatedly asks you to control the pelvis and trunk while each leg accepts load. A short Pilates session can complement that work by slowing movement down and making control—not exhaustion—the objective.
Pilates for runners: The 20-minute session
Complete two controlled rounds, resting whenever technique starts to fade.
- Breathing with gentle abdominal brace: five slow breaths.
- Bridge: 8–12 repetitions.
- Dead-bug heel taps: 6–10 each side.
- Side-lying leg lift: 8–12 each side.
- Bird dog: 6–10 each side.
- Side plank from knees or feet: 15–30 seconds each side.
- Supported calf raise: 10–15 repetitions.
Keep the range comfortable and the breath moving. Stop a set when you cannot keep the pelvis and ribs controlled. This is supporting work; it should not compromise tomorrow’s run.
Where Pilates fits in a running week
Place the session after an easy run or on a non-running day. During a hard training week, one round may be enough. Beginners can start with bridge, bird dog and supported calf raises, then add movements across several weeks. Pair it with RunHQ’s beginner 5K plan, runner strength plan and mobility routine.
Studio kit and hydration
Product spotlight: Choose clothing that lets you move freely and check alignment without distraction. Tavi Active Australia describes its activewear as designed for studio use and everyday movement. Fit and comfort remain personal, so check the brand’s current sizing and care guidance before buying.
Some studios require grip socks. TAVI and ToeSox offer purpose-built Pilates socks with non-slip sole grips in full-toe, half-toe and conventional designs. Grip socks do not replace good technique or studio safety rules: select the correct size, inspect the sole and retire pairs that twist, slip or lose grip.
Hydration reminder: Bring water and drink according to thirst, conditions and individual needs. Mizu Australia/New Zealand sells reusable bottles, including insulated options. Choose a capacity, lid and cleaning routine that suit the class and your day rather than treating a bottle as a hydration prescription.
After training, use RunHQ’s food-first recovery guide. Independent running-watch comparisons are available at Running Watches Australia.
